We’ve got the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro ahead of Apple’s release this Friday. Mike unboxes them and shares what’s new and the differences between the two models.
While not really an unboxing (Mike couldn’t wait), there really isn’t much to show in the box anymore. Apple no longer includes wired earbuds or a charging block which it claims is better for the environment since most people already have a number of options. This also has reduced the size of the box since all that is inside now is the actual phone, a USB-C to Lightning charge cable (which allows for fast charging with a compatible charging block or outlet) and a single Apple sticker.
Just like our first impressions from the Apple Event keynote, the new phones do not disappoint on the cosmetic front. The smooth, squared off edges are a welcome change from the rounded edges of previous models with the exception of the iPhone 5 which was arguably one of our favourite form factors. It’s very easy to hold in your hand with a solid grip. The shell colours are rich and bold.
The return of Magsafe is also a welcome change. Magnetic rings embedded in the entire iPhone 12 line make it dead simple to ensure a solid connection to the wireless QI charger with no guesswork. You can literally hang the iPhone from the MagSafe connection its that strong. We’re also looking forward to the range of accessories that manufacturers will be offering that take advantage of this new connectivity, especially with options like removable wallets and even Pop Sockets that can easily be used during the day and then removed for wireless charging at night.
We also compare the sizes of these new phones and the forthcoming iPhone 12 Mini thanks to a 3D printed mockup of what the new mini be like.
