The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona isn’t happening. But the Chinese mobile giant, HUAWEI, carries on with product announcements for all its new products. They’re pushing through with launching new MateBooks, MatePad Pro tablets, the Mate Xs folding phone, and their highly anticipated APPGallery which allows HUAWEI to get around the Google Play Store problem.
Canadian pricing and availability are still up in the air as of this posting but we hope to have complete updates soon. In the meantime, please enjoy the video below.
The new MateBooks have all been upgraded to Intel 10th Generation Core mobile processors.
The top of the line Matebook X Pro features a beautiful unibody alloy construction and a FullView Display giving it an impressive screen to body ratio of 91 percent. The 3000×2000 pixel display is also full touch. Intel Core i5 and Core i7 configurations are available.
The MateBook D series notebooks are available in 14 and 15-inch models. Aimed at modest budgets, they are still slim, light, and has a 1920×1080 pixel screen with an 87% screen to body ratio. The D series will offer models with both the Intel Core series and AMD Ryzen mobile processors with integrated Vega graphics.
The new HUAWEI MatePad Pro 5G features a 10.8-inch HD display with support for cinema-grade DCI-P3 colour gamut. It also features ultra-thin bezels, giving it the highest body to screen ratio of any tablet.
Onboard is Huawei’s Kirin 990 5G chipset. This means you get 5G connectivity, high performance and power efficiency, in a very slim design.
This year is the year of folding phones. And HUAWEI continues to push the development envelope of the Mate X series with the new Mate Xs. It features a number of improvements over the original Mate X including the Kirin 990 5G chipset onboard, which gives it the 5G connectivity, snappy performance, and optimized battery life. There is also a more durable display that also offers better brightness, saturation, and clarity. The Falcon Wing hinge also receives upgrades with components using more durable and stiffer zirconium-based liquid metal parts. With the inherent flex in Titanium, the new parts are noticeably snappier and crisper when opening the device.
The HUAWEI Mate Xs also features a Leica SuperSensing Quad Camera with a 40MP main camera, a 16MP ultra wide-angle camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 3D Depth Sensing camera.
Launching in Beta Mode for Canada, the new AppGallery is currently available to all Huawei phones and apps developed for HMS Core.
HMS Core aka Huawei Mobile Services is basically a replacement of Google Mobile Services, allowing developers to access the full hardware capabilities of Huawei devices, including new services based in the cloud like AI, location, in app purchases and more. This also allows HUAWEI to get around restrictions for the Google Play Store, while still maintaining compatibility with the Android OS. It’s clear that HUAWEI isn’t waiting for things to work out and have positioned their AppGallery as a third option in the marketplace. And with 400 million users already on their platform, the prospects look promising, and they are aiming for stable growth in the long term, with an emphasis on quality, security, and a more ‘Glocal’ curation of apps.
When can you get the HUAWEI AppGallery on your non-HUAWEI devices? There is currently no timeline for access to the marketplace from other Android devices. But it is something they may very well be thinking about. We’ll keep you updated on what we find out.
The P30 and P20 series have really put the Android device market on notice. The appearance of the P40 series has been highly anticipated and HUAWEI has marked the date of March 26, 2020, as the day that they will let the world know what to expect regarding their new flagship.
