Instagram has announced it will be creating a dedicated shopping page for businesses. With businesses still in recovery from the pandemic, this couldn’t have come at a better time.
Accessing shops will be straight forward using the explore tab on Instagram. This will give you direct access to the Instagram Shops. These shops will be tailored to users based on their behaviours online and will help with recommendations of things you might be interested in.
Checking out will be just as straight forward: Instagram is using Facebook Pay. Facebook Pay is a safe and secure way to pay for items in the Facebook ecosystem. This system allows users to input information from their debit or credit cards. The information can be saved should you wish to use it for future purchases. Should you be feeling charitable, you can also use Facebook Pay to donate to your favourite charity.
Shopping on Instagram has been a slow but steadily advancing feature. It was only last year that in-app purchases were possible without the need to visit a seller’s website. Instagram is, of course, not going to do this for free. They will be taking a cut of what is sold.
Creating these spaces for retail is a good addition to Instagram. Businesses have been taking a hit since early this year and although nothing is perfect, it will give the small and medium-sized businesses another online outlet. With increased online shopping demand during as a result of the pandemic, the timing for this launch couldn’t be better. Purchasing what you need while avoiding the risk of infection will continue to help us flatten the curve.
