One of the best broadway shows will soon be making its debut on Disney+. Originally scheduled to release in 2021, the time table has been moved up.
The critically acclaimed show debuted in 2015 and was an instant success. The book was originally written by Lin-Manual Miranda. The premise of the story revolves around Alexander Hamilton. Hip hop, R&B, soul and pop make up the majority of the music in this musical which is a bit of a departure from traditional broadway. Hamilton was nominated for a record 16 Tony awards and won 11 of them, including best musical.
You are probably wondering why I am talking about a musical on a tech site. Disney+ has picked up the rights to stream Hamilton starting on July 3rd. Originally scheduled to release October 15, 2021 in theatres, this is a welcome change in plans. With broadway going dark amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an amazing way to introduce the family to musicals. Hamilton on Disney+ will feature the original cast. It is worth noting that to see this production live is north of $150 per ticket. This isn’t even including gas, time to get to the theatre, parking, food and of course a Haagen-dazs or two at intermission.
The other amazing part of this release is Disney+ will be streaming this is 4k HDR (High Dynamic Range) as well as with a full Dolby Atmos (height enabled) soundtrack for those with the appropriate gear. It’s one thing to watch a production like this in the theatre. Getting good seats are super expensive and if you don’t shell out massive money it’s tough to really see it. Having it stream in such high quality resolution and sound guarantees that you will experience this amazing musical the way the director and creator wanted you to.
