When I was growing up, Nintendo was all the rage. This was well before there was ever a PlayStation or Xbox. Whatever Nintendo was coming out with, we were buying. Over the years, the gaming industry has become massive and also has no shortage of options. Nintendo has survived and most recently has been flying with the addition of Animal Crossing.
April to June is typically not been the hottest quarter for Nintendo, however this year they are up 428% over last year. Switch sales are up 166%, putting out over 5.5 million systems for the quarter. The total number of Switch’s shipped is just shy of the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
A large reason for this run is Animal Crossing. New Horizons has moved over 10 million units in that normally quiet April-June span. This brings the total number to over 22 million copies. Even more so, each new Switch was played in that quarter, and over half of them were playing Animal Crossing: New Horizon on the first day it came out. This new Animal Crossing is bringing a plethora of new clients to the platform. New Horizon is already the second best-selling Switch game of all time behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
COVID of course had an effect on the shipment of units but Nintendo has stated that the situation is all but rectified. The real hold up has been in their Fitness RPG game ‘Ring Fit’ which is still very tough to find in retail stores. Nintendo had this to say about the situation:
“Demand for this new proposal from Nintendo of exercising by playing an adventure game was so much higher than our forecasts that the global supply has been unable to keep up since release,” Nintendo says in its statement. “The lingering effects of this product shortage in the market are still an inconvenience to a large number of consumers, but as with the Nintendo Switch family of systems, we will continue to work to ensure a sufficient amount of shipments for the holiday season.”
It’s great to see Nintendo doing so well. At the heart of most gamers, there is a spot for this platform. With so many incredible titles over the years, it is great to see them doing so well with the new Animal Crossing. As they make the move to this new fitness gaming project I hope to see their profits continue to climb.
