Streaming apps are everywhere you look. Between Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others, it seems hard to stand apart from the crowd. So how do you differentiate yourself? I assume that being owned by Jay-Z, it helps. TIDAL is going outside the box. They offer live streams to concerts, downloads for offline use, and exclusive new release music and video. Now, they’re teaming up with Dolby to introduce ATMOS audio.
Most of us who have grown up loving music understand one truth, that music is recorded in 2 channels and is to be played in 2 channels. I must admit that I subscribed and have listened for the last couple of days and some of these audio tracks leave your arm hair standing on end. This is great for those of us that don’t have a dedicated theatre room and have invested in to height enabled audio in our main rooms.
There is a number of playlists available in the Atmos section which will show based on your components capabilities. To my surprise there was everything from remastered Chopin and Beethoven all the way to new releases from the Weeknd and Lil Wayne. There is some music that doesn’t come alive in Atmos like modern hip hop for example. I stumbled upon Nora Jones’s ‘Come Away with me’ and it instantly brought validation to the idea of mixing music in the ATMOS space. TIDAL has not disclosed what percentage is available in ATMOS however the app does a great job showing you available options.
TIDAL is offering a free trial of 30 days to acquire new subscribers. I recommend you check out the service not only for ATMOS but also for their lossless audio stream which claims to give the subscriber a better overall audio service. With height audio becoming so widespread in the movie world it was only a matter of time until it transitioned to music. The question becomes, is it worth $20/month
