At the beginning of the year, people tend to assess their health and set goals to improve themselves. A clear theme for CES 2014 this year was tech integrating with health and fitness, using cool new hardware, like Jawbone and easy-to-use software. We’ve identified four free, quick and easy apps to help you achieve your personal health and fitness goals in 2014.
Kudolife (iOS only): Kudolife is sort of like combining Instagram with MyFitnessPal, but paired down for simplicity. You take photos of your food, share it, and other Kudolife users rate it by giving you ‘kudos,’ (the app’s version of likes) and commenting. By filling out the food’s macronutrients (fats, carbs, proteins) you track the food you’re consuming. Unlike MyFitnessPal, it’s quicker to log your food, since it only asks for macronutrients, and is a visual way to remember what you had. It’s a social way to eat, that encourages you to eat well.
Unplug (iOS & Android): Have you ever posted on Facebook that you were “unplugging” or “disconnecting” for the weekend to recoup? There’s an app for that. It’s part of the #unplug movement, encouraging you to experience life without your smartphone. The app asks how long you want to unplug, why you’re unplugging, who you’re with and lets you take a photo of it to post to Facebook. It then prompts you to put your phone in Do Not Disturb mode or Flight Mode, and alerts you when the countdown is over. This app will help us be more mindful and present in 2014, in an inclusive way.
Pact (iOS & Android): For those of us that have problems motivating ourselves to get to the gym, there’s a new tool. Once you sign up for an account on Pact, you put in your credit card/Paypal info and you choose which pact to make. There are three— gym, veggie, or food log. You decide how often you’ll do the pact a week in terms of working out or food consumption, then you log the info. When you succeed, you get paid. When you fail, your card gets charged $5 or $10. In order to prove you’re actually doing the pact, you must take and share photos of the food you’re eating, or be in the location of your gym for at least 30 minutes. Don’t worry, it can connect to other apps for running, home workouts, and easy food logging. Other users keep the system honest by voting on photos of food to make sure no one is cheating. We promise, you’ll definitely be motivated to put in your 30 minutes of cardio when your money is on the line.
Nudge (iOS & Android): Ever wonder how healthy you are? Nudge is a simple way to determine your health factor. You easily log how many servings of water, fruit/veggies, activity and sleep, as well as other foods liquids, and indulgences. When you’ve completed the recommended amount, you get a check mark. Then Nudge calculates your health point, 110 being perfect. The whole purpose of Nudge is to increase your health index over a period of a month, by being easy and encouraging. It’s a great snapshot into how what you do and eat on the daily affects your life overall.
